What is ceramic coating?
Ceramic Coating, SiO2 or silica applied on paint surfaces crystalizes between 7 to 14 days (depending on weather & temperature) after it is fully cured. The micro-thin surface acts as a thin protection layer & has extreme hydrophobic features.
When ceramic coating is applied on top of a vehicle’s clear coat, it fills the valleys & crevices of damaged clear coat. It then forms an extra layer of protection on the clear coat. Besides protection, ceramic coating will create a perfectly flat surface & will deflect perfect light. This is the main reason ceramic coated vehicles look glossier, increasing paint depth (especially on black and dark colored cars) and better paint clarity (mostly visible on pearlescent and metallic paint).
Does ceramic coating protect the vehicle’s paint from ‘Stone Chips, ‘Deep Scratches’? Does it have self-healing features?
To debunk a misconception, ceramic coatings do not act as a ‘halo’ to protect your vehicle from stone chips and scratches. Because ceramic coating crystallizes on the clear coat, it is not a flexible surface and DO NOT have self-healing features.
What is the hype about surface hydrophobicity in car detailing and ceramic coating?
With a slick surface & tighter surface tension, liquid & water find it hard to adhere to the paint surface. This makes the car less susceptible to dirt clinging to the vehicle’s surface. Even tougher dirt such as tree sap, bird droppings, bat droppings or mud would not cling firmly onto the paint surface. This makes maintenance washes much easier.
How to maintain ceramic coated vehicles?
With a weekly no-contact Foam-On and Rinse-Off method and a fortnightly thorough wash including contact washing using a wash mitt, this would keep the surface of your ceramic-coated vehicle well-maintained and the hydrophobic features at its optimum condition.
Do ceramic-coated vehicles require special maintenance?
Absolutely! We recommend a decontamination wash every 3 to 6 months to cleanse & revive the surface.
At Detail X, we offer chemical decontamination washes followed by a ceramic coat booster to revive the surface.
